Spot and Deal with Loaded Words and Phrases and Vivid Material

Your Goal

The following tasks are designed to counteract the influence that emotive and loaded words and vivid material can have on how we understand the situation and problem. Material that is emotive and vivid can easily come to seem more important than it really is.


Try the following tasks

  1. Deal with Emotive and Loaded Words

    • Look through your description of the situation and problem for any loaded or emotive words or phrases

    • Either replace these loaded or emotional words and phrases with more objective alternatives, or, if this seems impossible, strive to neutralise the effect of these emotive words by becoming aware of the loaded way you are describing the situation and problem

  2. Deal with Vivid Material

    • Without looking at your description ask yourself what stands out vividly

    • Objectively assess this vivid material for how important it really is.
