Motivate yourself to carry out your decision


Try the following tips


  1. Ask yourself what sort of person would carry out this option. Perhaps this will be brave, kind, strong, self-actualising, or wise even. Be this sort of person.

  2. Take the long view. Ask yourself how you would feel in six months, a year, five years, at the end of your life, if you did not carry out this option.

  3. Keep the negatives in proportion. You almost certainly won't be able to satisfy all the values you would like so don't dwell on what you're not going to get. Think positively about how your decision is built to satisfy as much as possible of what you have weighed up as mattering most. Of course if it turns out not to satisfy these values you can always change your mind (indeed you should).

  4. Fight vivid material with vivid material. Perhaps some negative things stand out vividly even though rationally you don't think them that important. Make your own vivid material to combat this. Perhaps this is a brief statement of your hopes and dreams, an inspiring passage you have found in a book, or an image of what you want to come about.

  5. Make a public commitment to your decision. Tell people who will approve about what you plan to do and why. You will get their support to carry through your decision and a sense of shame if you don't to spur you on.

  6. Mentally prepare yourself to deal with awkward moments. Think about what difficulties there will be and how you will deal with them. What will you say to particular people, how will you go about certain tasks.

  7. Make use of your emotions to provide a motor. Think yourself into an emotional state that will energise you to carry out your decision.

  8. Think of the risks of not taking the decision as well as the risks of taking it.
