Advice on Assessing Options

Your Goal at this Stage

You have now reached a crucial stage in your decision making where various factors come together. You should have by this stage have achieved the following (if you don't feel you have these requirements yet you can iterate back to previous stages):

• a clear statement of the decision you are trying to make
• a full and unbiased understanding, both cognitively and affectively, of the situation you are in
• a weighted list of values that you wish to satisfy
• some potential options for satisfying these values

You now need to assess these options to find an option which:

• is appropriate to the decision you are trying to make
• is appropriate to the situation you are in
• satisfies as many of the weighty values as possible

The main abilities that you will use and develop at this stage are:

• understanding values
• emotional wisdom
• critical thinking
  

Some of the main difficulties that you will face are:

• getting stuck in ruts
• polarised thinking - not thinking "win-win"
• emotions that dominate excluding other options
